Summer Reading Challenge

PS 29 SUMMER READING CHALLENGE

Every summer, PS 29 runs a Summer Reading Challenge, which encourages all of our students to read, and to log the time that they spend reading. The purpose of this annual event is twofold:

1) to encourage ALL of our students to enjoy time reading this summer,

2) to raise funds to support our school library and literacy programming via donations received from families and friends

HOW DOES IT WORK?
Easy! Your kid reads, notes the amount of time they’ve read, and you throw your initials down.
You, friends and family members all pledge to donate a certain amount of money if your reader meets
their targeted reading hours (say $15 -$100 if they meet their summer goals – no pledge is “too small”),
or if the student reader meets the goal of 30 hours over vacation.
(Think of this: if 150 students participate this summer, and 150 students raise $46 each, we’ll hit our
goal!)

Reading logs will be sent home with students before the end of the school year, and if you need any
additional information, please feel free to email: ps29reads@gmail.com

WHAT WE NEED TO DO THIS YEAR:
We need more readers, and more pledges. Last year, we had under 50 student participants (out of a
student body of 940 kids) and together, those readers raised $5,000 to support the PS29 PTA.
Our goal this year is to have at least 150 student readers, and to raise a combined $7K.

WHY SUMMER READING IS SO IMPORTANT:
Well, first of all – it’s fun! In addition to being fun – it’s really important. Some studies show that elementary school aged students who aren’t reading during the summer, lose up to two months of reading skills by the time school has started back up again.

WHAT WILL OUR STUDENT READERS GET FOR PARTICIPATING?
This year, we’re thrilled to announce that everyone’s favorite local independent bookstore, Books Are
Magic, has agreed to partner up with us in support of all of our readers! They will be putting together
little gifts for the top 10 readers – those kids who log the most amount of reading over the summer.
Books Are Magic is also putting together a curated reading list, by grade level, of books that they will
have in stock on their shelves this summer – click here to view the list. We’ll also be sure to
send out information on how to get a Brooklyn Public Library card for your kids, if they don’t have one –
supporting our local libraries is more important than ever, and we want to get all of our students in on
the act!

Every reader who reads 30 hours this summer, will be invited to participate in a celebratory pizza party,
in September, when we get back to school. (Stay tuned for announcements about a special guest
coming to the party!) There will also be certificates for all readers, and a picture of the top 10 readers
will be included in a school-wide email.
