THE P.S. 29 PARENT-TEACHER ASSOCIATION (PTA)
The P.S. 29 PTA is a long-standing organization of parents and guardians of P.S. 29 students, and teachers in the school, whose mission is to support the school in a myriad of ways: encouraging parent involvement, raising money, solving problems, and giving voice to parent opinion in the school and in the community. The PTA was incorporated in 1985 and gained recognition as a tax-exempt organization under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code in 1987. The formal name of the PTA is the Parents and Teachers Association of P.S. 29, Inc.
As parents and guardians of children attending P.S. 29 you are automatically members of the PTA, as are all teachers teaching in the school. Studies have shown that children whose parents are involved with their schools, and participate in school activities, do better in school. The P.S. 29 PTA Board is composed of the Co-Presidents, Vice-Presidents, Secretaries and Treasurers, and ten Board Members, all of whom work hard and with great enthusiasm. But the PTA will be most successful when all parents, guardians and teachers volunteer their time and services at one or more of the activities and events hosted throughout the year.
P.S. 29 benefits enormously from the energy and commitment of the PTA, and from the funds raised by the PTA, which pay for and/or subsidize such diverse things as teaching assistants, chess instruction, the science garden, professional development for teachers, the Orff music program, visiting artists, gym equipment, and classroom grants for all of the teachers. Throughout the year, the P.S. 29 PTA organizes and supports a number of events to raise funds and encourage community building within the P.S. 29 family. Some of the events include the Book Fair, Candy Sale, School Photo Day, the Election Day Bake Sale, Ice Skating Nights at Prospect Park, the Spring Fling and Silent Auction, the Annual Talent Show, Super Science Saturday, the Spring Block Party and various other events. The PTA also publishes the School Directory and maintains and oversees the P.S. 29 website: www.ps29brooklyn.org.
There are many ways to get involved in your school. Parents are encouraged to get involved in any way that is comfortable for them, including: attending PTA meetings, being a class parent, volunteering to help with events, helping to raise and/or contribute money, or volunteering your skills and talents. Meeting dates and other important information will be posted on the website. The PTA also sends letters home with students in their backpacks, but this is not always a reliable means of communication so parents and guardians with internet access are encouraged to check the website. If you have a question or a comment for the PTA Board please e-mail one of your co-presidents.
The PTA meets once a month in the P.S. 29 auditorium. Childcare and pizza for P.S. 29 children are always provided.
