4th Grade Middle School Articulation Presentation 2016-2017

Presentation from the Middle School Articulation Process meeting for 5th grade parents, September 2016

Notes from D15 Community Education Council Meeting

  • First year that schools will get a blind ranking. Huge change, parents do not need to worry about what schools are seeing or worry about where they rank a particular school.

  • “Every child is different, pay attention to what your child needs. Talk to your child. You do not have to go to a tour to be considered to a school.” Quote from Anita Skop, Superintendent D15.
  • In the interest of maintaining diversity, MS 839 and MS 447 Math and Science are both setting aside seats for children that are eligible for free lunch.  MS 839 will set aside 40% of the lottery and MS 447 will be setting aside 30% of their seats.   At MS 447 the admissions criteria remains the same but it will be looked in two groups.
  • NEST+m will now be a choice on your child’s District 15 application IF you apply for the entrance exam at the Nest+m website.
  • D15 Middle School Fair, October 5th, 5-7:30 PM. There will be three Information Sessions at the , with a Q & A at each session. Some principals and assistant principals will be there.  Though some parents might find the fair crowded and chaotic, it is still worth going if you have particular questions about your child.  Some principals and assistant principals will be at the fair.

Middle School Information Email #1

Dear 5th Grade Families,

Welcome to what we’re sure will be an exciting year for you and your 5th grader. As we settle into this new school year we begin the Middle School Articulation Process. During the first few weeks of school, we’re taking the time to reach out to middle schools to gather information about upcoming middle school events. This information will be shared with families via e-blasts and will be sent out early next week. In the meantime, please mark your calendars for the following events:

The DOE’s Office of Enrollment hosts a middle school fair for each school district to give families an opportunity to learn about the middle schools. District 15’s Middle School Fair will take place on October 1st at MS 88, 5:30-7:30 PM. The Park Slope Educational Complex which is located at 544 7th Avenue. No registration is necessary. If you reside outside of D15 and are interested in attending the Middle School Fair for your home district, follow this link for the fair dates throughout the city. This is also a good link to bookmark as it is updated with middle school events.

Here’s another opportunity to learn about District 15 middle schools….. District 15 Middle School Forum will be held on Tuesday, October 6th at 6:00 pm at the Brooklyn New School which is located at 610 Henry Street. Presentations will be made by representatives from various middle schools in District 15 and you will have the opportunity to ask questions. Information on which schools will be presenting will be coming soon.

On Thursday, October 8th we will be having our PS 29 Middle School Information Session at 8:45 in the auditorium. At this meeting you will learn the steps of the Middle School Articulation Process, statistics on previous years’ placement and get answers to any questions or concerns you may have about the process.

The Office of Enrollment has established a list of resources about various parts of the Middle School Articulation Process. Follow this link to access those resources.

Please know that we are here to help and guide you through this process. Feel free to reach out with your questions or concerns regarding Middle School.

Thank you!
