Farm On! focuses on the growth and sustainability of the school garden, food production as a hands-on tool for teachers in meeting their grade-specific learning objectives, and will organize and promote Harvest Week to help students get rooted in our region’s agricultural cycle.
In 2007, the PS29 garden began as a brainstorm within the school community – teachers, school chefs, administration and parents – and has since literally grown into our own unique food community. Once the garden beds were built and the veggies were sprouting, the bounty of this “Seed to Plate” effort merged with Harvest Day, a project originally brought to our school in 2008 with the support of the Garden to Café program, funded by the Mayor’s Fund.
This year marks the 7th Annual Harvest Celebration and what began as Harvest Day has evolved into Harvest Week. It is because the school community has come together to participate in the process that we have a garden with more than 20 different vegetables. Aside from Harvest Week, the garden continues to serve as an inspiration, and often ingredients for, our healthy school lunch program.
Together let’s continue to celebrate the power of food!
HARVEST DAY LUNCH, FRIDAY, OCTOBER 16! Don’t send lunch! But do volunteer to help
Every year PS29, Wellness in the Schools (WITS) and School Food’s Garden to Cafe program work in conjunction to celebrate our beautiful garden and all the bounty of the fall season. Friday’s Harvest Lunch will be the precursor to Harvest Week which will begin next Monday, October 19. Watch your email for details. We will be looking for volunteers throughout the next week. Click here to see the volunteer schedule.
School Food’s Garden to Cafe Program will have a chef on hand and will prepare a tasting of kale and arugula salad with grape tomatoes and thyme (thyme will harvested from the PS29 garden and other veg will be sourced from NYC Greenmarket).
Chris DeLuna, PS29 dad, WITS chef partner and executive chef of the Patina Group, will offer a special chef tasting: grass fed beef mini meatballs with PS29 herb tomato sauce!
All children will be invited to sample the foods whether or not they have purchased school lunch (FYI – it’s pizza day!).
