ACADEMIC INTERVENTION SERVICES/STRATEGIES FOR SUCCESS
Our work with at-risk students is supported by regulations which require all schools in New York State to provide Academic Intervention Services (AIS) for students who score below the State designated performance level on State assessments and/or who are at risk of not achieving the State standards. These services are additional instruction and support that supplement the general curriculum. Our Child Study Team, composed of administration and support personnel, meets regularly to discuss support for at-risk children. Teachers also participate in these meetings to discuss specific needs. Pat Garvey, P.S. 29’s Intervention Coordinator, participates in monthly Intervention Team Meetings.
We have a variety of academic intervention supports and services including:
- Extended Day morning program Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 8:00 to 8:40;
- Reduced class size in grades 1, 2 and 3
- Assistant Teachers in K;
- Reading, writing and mathematics push-in/pull out services to be provided for our at-risk students in Grades 1-5 (Pat Garvey);
- At-risk counseling provided by our School Counselor, Cara Turnbull, and Social Worker, Madeline Fisher;
- At-risk speech services provided by Speech Pathologists: Amy McNeal and January Mark;
- Occupational therapy provided by Debra Bartolotti, Occupational Therapist.
